But WHY is art important?
Some of you might not use art as a career. So what?
Why is art still important?
Art is so so so very important. It is the lens that helps you see the world, it teaches you about working cooperatively, it teaches you how to take criticism, it helps you relate to a person who at first seemed unrelatable, it teaches you about life, about history and literature, math and science, it shows you places that would have otherwise been left unseen, it makes you think, laugh, cry, it makes you angry, it makes you happy. Art evokes so many emotions if you take the time to stop and look. Henry Miller said it best, "Art teaches us nothing, except the significance of life." History
It visually documents historical achievements, philosophical achievements, change in human reasoning and understanding. It underscores things we find important, valuable, critical to our understanding of the human experience.
Here is an article about WHY people painted on the Berlin Wall.
Art connects historical events with the humanity it represents.
It helps us understand where we have been.
Language Arts/ Current Events
Art can comment on our current experience.
Learning to understand art is like learning to read. You can understand commentary on current events and experiences in the modern world.
Artist Chad Wright created this piece, which is similar to the Normandy tribute in many ways. If you were talking about the US current economy issues this would be a great visual to bring up.
Science
There are some really really great pieces out there that use art to explore and learn about Science.
Scupltures defy gravity. They have to understand physics and geometry.
Potters deal with chemistry and measurements.
Painters undersand solvents, chemicals, pigments and color which are all directly tied to chemistry.
A little on the nose but did you know artist Charley Harper illustrated the Golden Book of Biology?
Andy Goldsworthy - manipulating physics and nature itself to create beauty
Math
Rhythm.
Geometry.
Proportion.
These are all math on a visual level. Who knew, right???
So WHY is art important?
It's been proven that early exposure to visual art, music, or drama promotes activity in the brain.
Art helps us understand other subjects much more clearly—from math and science, to language arts and geography. It encourages an understanding of the connections between all subjects of study and knowledge.
Art nurtures inventiveness as it engages us in a process that aids in the development of self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperation, and self-motivation.
Participating in art activities helps us gain the tools necessary for understanding human experience, adapting to and respecting others' ways of working and thinking, developing creative problem-solving skills, and communicating thoughts and ideas in a variety of ways.
